“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Shauna Mounsey is the definition of a jack of all trades, but a master in all.
She boasts bachelor’s degrees from Charles Darwin University in Law (2005) and Environmental Science (2006) in Darwin.
Mounsey’s career began in 2007, when she joined URS Corporation in Darwin as an environmental scientist, before transitioning to a corporate in-house legal role where she was responsible for drafting and reviewing project contracts.
“I initially had zero plans for my legal career,” says Mounsey. “I only studied law to prove a point because I was told I wasn’t smart enough to become a lawyer. Over the years, I have transitioned in and out of law, not because I didn’t love the law. The problem was I was just too interested in other careers as well.”
In 2009, she moved to Clayton Utz, specialising in environmental and corporate law and working for large property developers.
In 2011, she joined Ward Keller, leading the firm’s environmental law practice. Two years later, she moved to Perth to join Lavan as an associate in its environmental, planning and land compensation team.
In 2012, she joined WorleyParsons as a principal environmental scientist, and found time to establish an MMA gym, Champions Gym, in the meantime.
In 2013, Mounsey commenced trading at Offshore Environmental Planning, where she specialised in providing high-level strategic support and advisory services to the upstream oil and gas industry.
In that time, she began working with the Northern Territory Government as a senior communications officer to a senior environmental assessment and policy officer.
At the start of 2015, she left the government to become director of Eco-Fish, a fisheries management consultancy company operating in the Asia-Pacific region.
After her legal, scientific and communications work, Mounsey transitioned to tech, where she co-founded ExplorAR360, an augmented reality app created for the tourism sector. She also co-founded Staff Leverage, a digital strategy company that serviced small and large businesses in Australia and internationally.
In 2018, she joined Menzies School of Health Research as a marketing manager before returning to law and founding Acceleration Partners, a business advisory consultancy to help SMEs navigate legal issues and identify business growth obstacles.
In 2020, she became a senior associate with Bowden McCormack Lawyers + Advisers, until April 2022, when she joined her current employer, Source, as a senior legal counsel.
At Source, Mounsey provides expert in-house legal support to businesses across a range of sectors, in particular data privacy.
“Every choice I have made has been intentional. This has put me in a position where I am now at a stage in my legal career where I can turn my attention to any legal problem and comfortably solve it because I have extensive legal experience to draw upon, plus a lot of transferable skills from other careers.”
No matter what industry she is working in, her determination and leadership are Mounsey’s greatest qualities.
“I don’t see obstacles or stop signs. If I want something, I always find a way to influence or take calculated risks to achieve the desired outcome, and most of the time it pays off.”
