Jennifer McEwan is the president of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA), the peak professional body representing Australian patent and trade mark attorneys.
With a passion for intellectual property law, McEwan plays a significant role advocating for improvements in the IP system and promoting the value of intellectual property with a view to ensure the best possible outcomes for protecting IP rights in Australia.
McEwan began her working life as a research biochemist before entering the patent attorney profession in 1987. By 1994, she was registered as a patent attorney and had completed a law degree. She was admitted to legal practice in 1996.
Since being elected to the IPTA Council in 2012, McEwan has actively participated in discussions with IP Australia, particularly in the area of trade marks. Under her leadership, IPTA has focused on advocating for progressive and equitable changes in IP law and practice with the aim of improving Australia’s global IP standing and investment in innovation.
In addition to her voluntary role at IPTA, McEwan is a principal at Wrays IP, balancing her commitment to both her firm and the advancement of Australia’s intellectual property landscape.
