What sets legaltech company LawHawk apart from others in the market is “the unique combination of legal experience, automation expertise and business experience,” says co-founder Gene Turner.
As managing director of the company, corporate and finance specialist practitioner Turner brings to the table an MBA and law firm ownership savvy. Thus, LawHawk has been able to offer clients the perspective they need to marry legal and business requirements in the process of legal automation.
The company started out in 2015 with what Turner described as “a very narrow focus on automating legal documents for law firms”. However, in the years since, the company has refined its offering to examine how it can contribute to an improvement in an organisation’s outcomes as a whole.
“In practice, this means working with our clients – mainly in-house legal teams and the business units they support – to understand the overall processes, identify how they could be improved, identify what (if any) technology (or combination of technologies) could be used to improve the processes, and help with implementation and ongoing support,” he explains. “It’s not so much about automation as business transformation.”
The aim of LawHawk’s service is to enable in-house legal teams to be a part of such a transformation.
“If legal wants to sit at the top table, this is how to do it. It does also simplify things a lot, because once you have incorporated the legal requirements into the business process, you can be a lot more certain that every transaction that goes through will be compliant,” Turner says.
He points out that while many business units have support from legal, there are also many who don’t.
“They either use their external lawyers, or go without – a good indication that there is a real gap in the market for lawyers to fill with new solutions that overcome whatever is holding businesses back from getting good legal advice when they need it – before the issues arise.”
With the wealth of tech options now available, LawHawk aims to get lawyers through analysis paralysis.
“We do a lot of work looking not only at the new technology that is emerging, but also building relationships with other parties that we can work with to design, build and support a combined solution. There is no single silver bullet. It’s a combination of people, process and technology that delivers results,” Turner explains.
The company looks into a wide range of solutions, from those that maximise Microsoft apps like SharePoint to customised ones incorporating low-code software development platforms like K2 and Outsystems.
“Rather than try and become experts in every area, we stick to what we can do best, and partner with other experts where required. We translate, project manage and bridge the gap between legal, IT, and the broader business – addressing the reasons that many projects fall over,” he says.
In the long run, LawHawk is looking to expand its reach from New Zealand and Australia to markets like the UK and the US.
“Now, we have much more frequent recognition awards because we want to celebrate people staying at CAAT and recognize the contributions that they bring to the organization”
