Running a law firm requires innovation and efficiency. Software firm LEAP discusses how to stop spending your non-billable hours on admin tasks, and why cloud-based platforms are the future of law

“Innovation is at the heart of everything that we do here at LEAP, and so making sure that we’re providing the right solutions and the right pieces of software in the right way to help our clients is the most important thing for me”

When it comes to software, cloud-based practice-management platforms have gained a lot of popularity in the legal sector over the last several years. A 2019 survey by Fish & Richardson found that almost 80% of law firms stored client data in the cloud, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated interest in adopting new technology.
With the software market as advanced as it is today, industry expert LEAP says lawyers should not be starting every client document from scratch or spending valuable time on easily automated administrative tasks.
Instead, investing in a strong practice-management tool has become a no-brainer. And with lawyers increasingly needing to access their matters from a range of different locations – from home, at work, or in court – cloud solutions are set to be the preferred choice for the legal sector of the future.
LEAP legal software: 30 years of innovation
Emerging at the forefront of legal technology, LEAP offers its clients a full-service practice-management platform, allowing them to run “an efficient and flexible law firm from anywhere, at any time.”
According to Mark Burgess, CEO of LEAP’s development arm (LEAP Dev), COVID-19 was a turning point for many lawyers in adopting new legal technology. He says that while the push to innovate legal technology has been part of LEAP’s mission for decades, the past few years have seen interest levels skyrocket. Lawyers are discovering the benefits of ditching their complex physical servers and instead are embracing a cloud-based system – one that allows them the flexibility to work wherever they choose.
“When COVID-19 hit, we knew that working arrangements for legal practitioners would inevitably change, and like employees across many industries, they, too, would have to start working from home,” Burgess says.
“Legal technology that enabled remote working made perfect sense to us pre-COVID, and we’ve been working for the last decade on trying to get law firms to leave outdated server machines behind and adopt modern practice-management software.
“We eliminated all of the constraints that came with client servers to ensure lawyers could work remotely – whether it was from home, from court, or on the go.”
LEAP’s software integrates three key components – matter management, document automation, and legal and trust accounting – into a single platform. Its powerful document-management system produces automated, up-to-date legal documents, and clients also benefit from in-built accounting and legal publishing tools.
The platform integrates tools such as time-recording software, automated email management and performance measuring – in short, everything you need to run a law firm from one place efficiently.
Based on over 30 years of innovation and over $20m in research and development per year, Burgess says the platform is designed to give users the best possible lift in productivity.
Chantal McNaught, product manager at LEAP New Zealand, says LEAP’s software development is consistently done in parallel with feedback from lawyers, meaning the platform is constantly developing in tandem with the changing needs of its target market.
“We’re always trying to listen to the clients,” McNaught says. “We collect feedback from a variety of sources, and that makes its way into the software, balanced in with whatever else we’re working on strategically. Every version of LEAP just gets better.”

‘Pushing boundaries’ to innovate
With a mission to boost law-firm productivity, LEAP has added a number of new features to its platform over the last several years.
The recently launched LEAP mobile app puts all of the platform’s capabilities into the palm of your hand, and LEAP Marketplace offers clients the chance to find the best apps to integrate with LEAP.
LEAP APAC CEO Donna Marie Broadley says that ultimately, driving constant innovation will always be LEAP’s key goal.
“Innovation is at the heart of everything that we do here at LEAP, and so making sure that we’re providing the right solutions and the right pieces of software in the right way to help our clients is the most important thing for me,” Broadley says.
“For a law firm, it’s imperative that you provide your lawyers with a proven cloud solution with an amazing user experience. It should enable productivity whether they are working from home or remotely from a mobile app.”
The approach has clearly worked, from the clients' perspective, with law firms praising the platform’s efficiency and its fully electronic capabilities.
Attwood Marshall Lawyers practice manager Holly Gilholme says the LEAP platform has been a significant boost to her practice, and notes that moving from a server-based to a cloud-based platform has been a significant time- and cost-saver.
“Attwood Marshall’s approach to technology is innovation. We do like to push the boundaries, and a big part of that is becoming more electronic and paperless,” Gilholme says.
“LEAP has helped us do that by ensuring that our records are accessible, no matter where our solicitors are based. We've found moving from a server-based product to a cloud-based product to be very beneficial – not only does it save money, but it also allows us to access our documentation anywhere and any time.”
