Anandanayagam’s open and measured approach finds her often sought out by clients to work on complex transactions and to represent them in difficult negotiations. As one client said, “She is an experienced lawyer with amazing technical skills,” but also “a relationship builder who can deal with people at all levels within and between organisations.”
As the partner responsible for the people side of practice management at Hudson Gavin Martin, Anandanayagam is proud of the importance placed on the calibre of the people they work with and who work for them.
She says, “Our people-focused approach means that we have a team of invested, authentic and talented people who all share a passion for the work we do and the clients we work alongside.”
Anandanayagam’s career trajectory wasn’t meticulously planned. Instead, her approach to her career has been underscored by working with good people and continuing to learn.
“I have had the privilege to learn from some exceptional lawyers and clients,” she says. “They were exceptional not only for their expertise in law or business but also for the humanity they showed.”
Before joining Hudson Gavin Martin, Anandanayagam was a solicitor with Linklaters LLP in London and Simmonds Stewart and Bell Gully in Wellington. She also served as senior legal counsel for Pacific Fibre, established to build a fibre optic cable network connecting Australia and New Zealand to the US.
Balancing a thriving career with a personal life is a challenge many professionals face, and Anandanayagam is no different.
“I deal with it by accepting that work and life are a juggle,” she says. “I am also fortunate to have people who are champions of my career and help me with that juggle.”
Anandanayagam sits on the board of Women in Film and Television (WIFT) New Zealand, an organisation that works to support growth and sustainability in the screen industries with a particular emphasis on equal opportunity and participation for women, and until mid-2021, served as the vice chair of the Asylum Seekers Support Trust board, a not-for-profit working to provide a safe and supportive environment for asylum seekers and convention refugees in New Zealand. She is also an advocate of “not-just-for-profit” business models and was the former chair of Thankyou Payroll, a software-as-a-service company with a triple bottom line, meaning social and environmental impact are as important as profits.
Anandanayagam believes it’s vital that young women see women in leadership positions who represent the diversity of the communities in which they live. She mentors at the Auckland Law School’s He Ira Wāhine Women’s Mentoring Program, inspiring the next generation of women legal professionals. This commitment is also evident in Anandanayagam’s role at Hudson Gavin Martin, with one team member commenting that “she embodies what it is to be a woman of influence. She is meticulous, thorough and fair, investing equally in her clients and staff. Despite the many hats she wears, she remains level-headed and always makes time to listen.”
