“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”
Kelvin Rampersad,
Carte Wealth Management
Emma Hughes is a senior associate at Anthony Harper, where she is a commercial litigator and construction advocate.
Emma was admitted to the bar in December 2012, after graduating from the University of Waikato in 2012 with a LLB with first-class honours and a BA majoring in political science. Her former roles were a summer clerk and then a solicitor at Dentons Kensington Swan from 2010–15. Since then, Emma has excelled and maximised the professional opportunities that have been afforded to her.
“I knew I wanted to do litigation, but I remained open minded ,” she says. “I was placed in the construction team at one of the large firms and was fortunate to be counsel in a leading case which remains relevant today. My attitude has always been to take the opportunities that come my way without hesitation.”
Emma acts for clients in a broad range of disputes and provides practical risk management advice. She has experience acting for national and international companies in corporate disputes and construction project disputes, along with appearing in the High Court and Court of Appeal.
Emma explains, “Every time I have acted for a client and helped solve a problem for them that makes a meaningful difference, it is a success.”
Emma acts for the largest construction company in New Zealand. Her construction expertise includes acting on delay claims, variation disputes and defective building work; advising on the nuances of construction contracts; and seeking resolution for her clients through adjudication, arbitration and court proceedings.
Emma is eager to take on any challenge, and in addition to construction, Emma acts for high net worth, high profile clients in relation to trust and family disputes, including relationship property. A highlight of her career is acting for the family of one of Hollywood's leading actors.
Emma's ethos is centred on being a trusted touchstone for her clients.
“I became a lawyer because I wanted to help others in a meaningful way. I try to approach all scenarios with positivity and calm, and striving for strong self-awareness is key. I find this approach can be reassuring for clients and the team I work with.”
Alongside her successful career, Emma is married and a mother to two young boys. She prides herself on acting for her clients at the highest level, but also caring for her two boys as their primary caregiver.
“I have a busy schedule which requires careful planning, focus and prioritisation. Being a mother and a lawyer has taught me how to manage my work efficiently and have incredible organisation skills".
