“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”
Kelvin Rampersad,
Carte Wealth Management
Promoted early to senior associate in 2022 for reliably exceeding expectations, Richard Idoine works in the litigation and dispute resolution team at Anthony Harper in Auckland. He began his career in-house at one of New Zealand’s largest tertiary institutions. With the institute earning more than $400m in revenue, catering to approximately 30,000 students and employing over 4,000 staff, it made for a highly dynamic legal environment where public and commercial interests met and occasionally clashed.
“I was equivocal about law at university but knew that if I stuck with it, I would end up in litigation eventually,” Idoine explains. “I saw it as the coalface of the legal industry and the most disposed to my skill set. Joining Anthony Harper and landing in such a highly regarded and experienced team of practitioners was an incredible stroke of luck, however.”
Currently, he acts for companies of all shapes and sizes, insolvency practitioners and high-net-worth individuals. While Idoine remains a generalist, he has developed expertise in disputes involving insolvency, contractual, property, trusts and company law dimensions.
When asked about his approach to working, Idoine explains how litigation requires a heightened focus on time management.
“It is unmatched in other practice areas due to the harsh and often irremediable consequences that arise from missed deadlines. Attention to detail and excellent organisation skills are essential and must be cultivated quickly to avoid burnout,” he says.
Idoine regularly works alongside senior King’s Counsel (both locally and abroad) on high-profile disputes and has appeared in the courts at all levels. He is known for bringing an analytical and measured approach to resolving complex problems.
The standout moment of his career so far relates to his involvement in the Supreme Court victory acting for the liquidators in Robt. Jones Holdings Ltd v McCullagh [2019] 1 NZLR 641.
Idoine adds, “This is now one of the seminal cases on voidable transactions in New Zealand, and its discussion of the policies and principles underlying the insolvency regime as a whole has been cited in various textbooks and debated by appellate courts in other jurisdictions, such as Australia.”
His overarching manner of dealing with clients is to tailor an approach that matches their various requirements.
“I am genuinely interested in the client’s story and find the process of designing and implementing a strategy that will allow them to achieve their desired outcome really gratifying.”
Idoine comes from an athletic background, having represented New Zealand internationally in Ice Hockey for a number of years, and credits his work ethic and team-player mentality to that stage in his life.
