Founded in 2004 by managing director Marcus Beveridge, Queen City Law is a boutique firm specialising in construction, property, litigation and immigration.
With over 30 years of experience in New Zealand’s legal market, Queen City Law has a reputation for taking a “no-nonsense approach” to handling complex cases. The firm has taken on a number of high-value matters in the property, construction and immigration areas of specialisation over the last year, and has also engaged with high-level political lobbyists to influence government decisions around immigration.
“We consider ourselves an extremely client-centric practice,” says Beveridge. “We have built systems over the years that are robust and efficient, and obtain excellent client outcomes. We are also highly strategic in our approach to the business of law, and we receive referral work from a wide source of connections, both onshore and offshore.”
When it comes to the immigration space, Beveridge notes that “10% of law firms do 90% of the heavy lifting in New Zealand,” and the last several years have brought a particularly high level of demand to Queen City Law’s immigration department. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a slew of instructions from high-profile clients, and the firm acted for multiple superyacht owners looking to gain access to New Zealand for themselves, their crews and their vessels.
During this period, the firm has also acted on many multimillion-dollar property transactions, many of which have long tails as they are some of the larger land subdivisions in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Queen City Law processed around 30% of all successful Investor 1 ($10m) applications in 2021–2022, and Beveridge notes that this resulted in “the creation of a significant number of new positions of employment in New Zealand, the construction of hundreds of new houses, and plenty of other downstream economic benefits.

“One of our most interesting cases was a brief from a North American billionaire to turn her superyacht into an MIQ facility,” Beveridge adds.
“Using our specialist knowledge, plus the goodwill we have built up with many civil servants over the decades, we have obtained a number of exceptional immigration outcomes as exception to policy, or by way of ministerial discretion. We have also been involved with clients in some tear-jerking circumstances around split families, and have arranged for key personnel to be seconded to New Zealand in very trying circumstances. It’s a fascinating area of law to be involved in.”
Despite a difficult and volatile environment, Queen City Law has thrived, and its culture of ‘success breeding success’ has remained strong. The firm is preparing to make some significant senior promotions, and Beveridge says the team’s passion for its practice areas has translated into an outstanding level of client satisfaction.
“Rarely is there as much professional satisfaction as there is in assisting clients successfully through the immigration maze,” he says.
“We’ve doubled down and played to our respective strengths, and we’ve done remarkably well through the strangest times in living memory. We’ve also had very little churn, grown our teams’ sizes and we’re looking to announce some exciting senior promotions for our crew, some who have done seriously heavy lifting for over a decade now.
“The team is exquisitely well run, we have a superb working culture, and we share our excellent client outcomes with each other virtually on a daily basis.”
