A dispute resolution and litigation partner at Lane Neave, Rebecca Scott has developed an unusual combination of expertise – agribusiness and electricity. She has acted for clients in the dairy, beef, sheep, poultry, fishing and horticulture sectors, and also acts for a number of South Island electrical lines companies.
Scott is a board member of Lane Neave, and she is also a partner representative on the firm’s social committee. Having developed strong legal expertise in two traditionally male-dominated sectors, Scott is a vocal advocate for diversity in leadership and the workforce. In 2022, she was one of the three female partners chosen to represent Lane Neave in Avenues magazine, where she discussed the changing face of leadership.
As a lawyer, Scott describes herself as “finely balanced between an introvert and an extrovert” – a combination which she says is uniquely suited to working in law.
“The legal industry is ideal for such a personality type,” Scott says. “I love getting to meet new clients and walking alongside them as they navigate tricky disputes. But I also get to sit alone and review masses of information and legal cases to assess the strengths of my clients’ situations.”
When it comes to diversity, she says that this is an important factor in building trust within the legal system. She is dedicated to pursuing justice for everyone and is a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s Standards Committee, which considers complaints against lawyers.
“Society is built on the fact that every person has the right to justice,” Scott says.
“The best way that can be achieved is for people to see people like them – of their sex, of their ethnicity, of their background – working within the justice system. That gives people the confidence to seek justice and to trust in it.”
Among her cases, Scott has acted for the members of a national agribusiness association in a contractual dispute and represented another farming company that was a victim of major fraud – a case which was also separately prosecuted by the Serious Fraud Office. She also acted on a claim against Orion New Zealand Limited in relation to liability for the Port Hills fires.
“When it comes to my work, I genuinely don’t have one single highlight,” Scott comments. “A successful result for a client is a highlight, whether that’s a win in court, or a settlement that means they can move on from a stressful time in their life.”
Rebecca Scott has been named an Elite Woman 2022 by NZ Lawyer.
